On March 27 at 2:30 p.m. Book Group will meet at St. Matthew’s to discuss the novel Moloka’i by Alan Brennert.
Growing up in idyllic 1890s Honolulu, seven-year-old Rachel Kalama is taken from her big, loving family when it is discovered that she has leprosy. She’s exiled to Kalaupapa, the leper colony on the island of Moloka’i where she finds a family of friends to replace the family she’s lost. Rachel’s life, though shadowed by disease, isolation, and tragedy, is also one of joy, courage, and dignity. True to historical accounts, Moloka’i is not about the failings of flesh, but the strength of the human spirit.
Save the date: On April 24 we will discuss Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.
