Do you like to read books and wish you had someone to discuss them with?
St. Matthew’s Book Group gets together every four to eight weeks on Sunday afternoons at 2:30, to discuss great books and socialize with snacks that often relate to what we’re reading. Every year, active participants nominate and then vote on the ten books we will read the upcoming year.
We have just started our new reading list and our first selection is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. This 2023 Pulitzer Prize winner, inspired by David Copperfield, will be discussed on December 10.
Over Christmas, we’ll read about a special Christmas gift in The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. We’ll discuss this musical mystery on January 7.
Then it’s off to read Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts. This story behind both the book and movie The Wizard of Oz will be discussed on February 18.
We will finish our winter explorations by traveling down The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt’s Darkest Journey by Candace Miller. Our travelogue will be on March 17.
During the Cherry Blossom Festival we’ll read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. We’ll discuss this historical novel set in Japan on April 28.
The rest of spring will be spent in Kerala, India reading The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. This epic of love, faith, and medicine will be discussed on June 23.
We will begin summer by reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This classic narrative about Africa’s cataclysmic encounter with Europe, will be discussed on July 21.
Midsummer brings us to an aquarium to learn about Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. We’ll discuss this witty exploration of friendship (with an octopus) on August 18.
We will end summer with another book that deals with colonialism, The Inheritors: An Intimate Portrait of South Africa’s Racial Reckoning by Eve Fairbanks. We will learn of the connection between one of our readers and the author on September 15.
And finally, in conjunction with the new exhibit on Belle da Costa Greene opening in the fall of 2024 at the Morgan Library, we will read The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. We’ll discuss the novel about this extraordinary woman on October 13.
You’re welcome to join us for one meeting or all of them. We love hearing multiple insights and opinions. For more information or to be placed on our email list—where you can learn more about the books we’re reading and our meetings—contact Tana Jackson.
