On November 6, while St. Matthew’s is in its own search process, we will discuss Search: a memoir with recipes by Dana Louise Potowski by Michelle Huneven at St. Matthew’s at 2:30 pm.
Huneven’s narrator, Dana Potowski—a restaurant critic, writer, and member of a progressive Unitarian Universalist Church in California—is asked to join the search committee for a new minister. While she hopes that participating will enliven her wavering spiritual life and help her create an organization that interests her more, she also harbors a secret motive—to gather enough material to pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience—resulting in this book.
“[W]e have relatively few novelists willing to write about the role of religion in contemporary life—and even fewer who address spiritual practices with humor, empathy and lived wisdom. Huneven is one of those rare spirits.”—Ron Charles, The Washington Post
“Huneven’s comic novel is a delicious, recipe-laden, must-read . . . hilarious.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR
Save the date: On December 4 we will discuss Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan.
